Junior Hand (Summer Contract) – Positions Filled
If you’ve read Our Story, we started out with the General Store, and then added Over the Road. Hence, we refer to our overall business as the General Road. We have a few different businesses, but we operate as one. When you join our business, wherever the location, you’re working for the General Road.
The General Road is a great place to work. We currently employ over 40 staff, across all age groups across multiple locations. We have above average retention rates so jobs don’t come up too often! We work hard on building a good culture and good team.
When jobs do come up, the first thing we do is to go through existing resumes. Definitely call in to one of our locations and ask to speak to a Supervisor or Manager to provide an introduction and your resume as a first step. We’re in the hospitality business and you need to be confident enough to waltz in and say hello!
If you have provided your resume, it’s appreciated if you can come here as a next step and complete a formal application with us. The below will give you a bit of an idea on our structure, our roles and our locations.
Organisation Structure
We’re not your average business. We’re quite unique and as a result have a lot of staff that can do a lot of different things. We started out with a very flat structure. Everyone did everything and everyone helped each other. But as we grew and added multiple locations, we had to put in place a bit of a structure so we had the right support for each of our roles in the right places.
Our Managers lead the business and the strategy. Managers will still work on the floor when needed, jump on dishes and do what needs to be done. But they have other responsibilities too like making sure we can run the business efficiently and at a profit. Supervisors run the shift at each of our locations. They support our Managers getting what needs to be done. They give direction on shift, and take the lead during a shift when there is a problem or a direction needing to be given.
All of our team, no matter the role, are leaders. Leadership takes many forms, but we look for people who can lead wherever they are needed. It doesn’t matter if you are on the dishes, front of house or back of house, there’s always things to be noticed, improved or shared.
Roles in our Business
Not sure what role you might be looking for? The below is an outline on the roles we have in our business. Per the Organisational Structure above, these roles can work in one or more locations across the business.
Junior Hands are generally in their first or second job, aged between 15 and 17 years of age. As a Junior Hand you are expected to help anywhere and everywhere in the business. You might start out in the Kitchen doing dishes, clearing plates in the cafe or restaurant, even out in the Barnyard bagging up products for retail. It’s our most diverse role, but an important one as you are providing support to our permanent staff in other senior roles. Once you reach the age of 18 you are expected to move into other areas of the business with higher skills learnt during your time as a Junior.
To get a junior hand role with us, you will generally start with a trial shift. This is an opportunity for you to jump in and show us that you can take instruction and complete a task. If that goes well, you are then generally offered a Junior Contract role, most likely a Summer Contract. This is a fixed term contract allowing you to complete shifts with us over a 3 month period. During this period you are expected to take on shifts allocated and extras as they come up and match your availability. During your contract your work ethic, personality, ability to take instruction, communicate and work as part of a team will all be assessed. Please note Hospitality isn’t for everyone. You need to be a happy friendly, confident person.
Kitchen Hands support our Qualified Chefs and other kitchen staff in producing food products. You would work in our Cafes or Restaurants, or onsite at other locations as required when we do things like catering or events.
Kitchen Hands have experience in food preparation, learnt with us as a Junior Hand with us, or elsewhere at other workplaces. You should be able to hold down a station, or support other more experiences kitchen hands or chefs in food operations.
Generally our hires for these roles come from our Junior Hand’s as they age up out of the Junior Hand role.
Qualified Chefs are leaders in our kitchens, responsible for the efficient running of the food business. We employ multiple qualified chefs, and they work in the cafes, restaurants and sometimes onsite for catering or functions.
Qualified Chefs have completed their apprenticeships, and generally have experience working in other similar kitchens like cafes, restaurants or pubs.
Our Barnyard Hands have another of the most diverse in our business. The Barnyard team deliver products to our customers, such as Water, Gas or Firewood, Garden Supplies and Stockfeed. Generally they have forklift license, truck licenses and other special skills to help get the job done.
In between delivering products, they might load customers directly in the yard, sell retail products like pet food and stockfeed, and maintain the fleet through cleaning and maintenance.
We’re a small family country business. To work in the barnyard you should be friendly, happy and approachable.
Coffee is a big part of what we do. So qualified trained baristas are incredibly important. We help our junior train to become baristas, or recruit those with ready made experience. Many of our baristas also hold their RSA certificates, meaning you can work during the day in our cafes, and at night in our bars. We generally prefer our bar staff to have barista experience, or visa versa. It just helps with flexibility and variety of role.
